![]() If your goldfish are acting strangely, rubbing against objects in the aquarium or resting listlessly at the bottom of the tank, you know something is wrong. The third part in the series covers goldfish disease prevention and ways you can find and combat problems that may result in infection. This is the second part in the goldfish disease series, and here we’ll examine seven of the most common goldfish diseases that affect freshwater aquariums and ponds. The first part in the series covered goldfish disease symptoms and gave you a list of fourteen behavioral and physical signs to look for when observing sick goldfish. So I decided to make this article a three-part series instead. ![]() Or any day really.I originally wrote a follow-up article about common goldfish diseases and how to prevent them, but the article was nearly 6,000 words of content. “You really think so?” Mattie whispered to the pompom, and Farrah took her hand from it and whispered back “I know so.” before finding herself again and adding “Now come on, focus on that cheer or Rileys gonna blame me for distracting you, and i cba to deal with her today. “Hey it’ll be ok” she said comfortingly “first days always rough, you just gotta get the ropes, like Riley said.” God she was agreeing with Riley, she was definitely gonna need a drink after this. I got lost like three times, there’s so many new people, I don’t do well with crowds so I skipped lunch, and I’m the only newbie on the team and i don’t.know.anythinng.” she began to sob, and Farrah, in a very un-Farrah like way, leaned over to put her arm round the small girl. “Hey, everything ok kiddo?” she asked, and Mattie looked up teary eyed. Farrah knew she wasn’t the best to deal with this by far, but the thought of going over to the team and them bombarding the already overwhelmed Mattie stirred something in her, and she shuffled closer. It was only when the littlest tiger went silent that Farrah tuned in, and turned to see her hunched over, fidgeting anxiously with one of the orange and white pompoms, an expression looking close to tears. “Riley thought it would be best for me to watch since i’m new, be shown the ropes and all that right? She’s really nice, everyone seems nice really, its a cool school, did I mention I’m the freshman? Sorry you can probably tell huh, first day jitters.” Farrah just sighed in response but Mattie didn’t seem to get the message, rambling on about her old school and friends and cheer routines and siblings and goldfish called Nori and whatever else. ‘Damn who needs drugs or alcohol when you’ve got uncorrupted innocence’ she smirked, but quickly put on her resting-bitch-face and muttered a bored sounding “sure whatever” hoping that she would at least get some quiet. “Hey, can I sit here?” a voice piped up, and Farrah looked up slowly to the jittery new freshman. She would have been in a lot of pain soon. After she was gone it was apparent how much fluid was filling her abdomen. I knew this morning was going to be her time.and I am glad I didn’t wait any longer. The other fish were very obviously giving her space and leaving her alone. Last night, she was hungry but couldn’t chew. My criteria for determining whether it was “time,” were: whether she was responsive, eating, active, moving without too much struggle, and no external sores or lacerations. I wanted her to spend her remaining time with her friends in the place she has always known.since I didn’t exactly know how many days she would ultimately have left. The other fish were not picking on her, and she was not struggling in the main tank. She would have deteriorated quickly in isolation, and spent her last days alone. I didn’t think it would be right to isolate her when I knew she had basically no chance of recovery in the event this was renal failure (I highly suspected it was). Only Chai was being affected, and she was still very active, eating normally, etc. I did not remove her from the main tank, as dropsy is not usually contagious unless it’s the result of a bacterial outbreak and I did not suspect that here. She didn’t seem to be getting worse and had only slightly pineconed up until yesterday. I treated the tank immediately with my usual meds (these will not affect the bacteria in the filter btw) and kept a close eye on her. Knowing that dropsy is not something fish generally rebound from, I was worried. She developed dropsy out of nowhere about a week and a half ago. This morning I said goodbye to my goofy little pom-pom Chai. I held off posting here for the past few days since I knew how this was going to end.
